New York State Assessments
The annual New York State Assessments in English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, and Science will be administered to grades 3-8 in accordance with the 2023-2024 Elementary and Intermediate level Testing Schedule.
As a school community, we encourage you to have your child participate, as the information obtained from these assessments is valuable. While no single assessment provides a comprehensive summary of student achievement, these assessments can provide information on student progress when coupled with other diagnostic information, classroom performance, and teacher feedback. These tests are required by the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and are designed to provide important information about whether students are prepared to progress through school and graduate with the critical thinking, problem-solving, and reasoning skills they need for long-term success in school, college, careers, and life. The assessment data also gives us an objective means of measuring how your child, the school, and our district perform compared to others across New York State. This helps inform local curriculum, instruction, and program planning.
The English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics assessments for grades 3-8 will each be administered over two days. Only students in grades 5 and 8 will be assessed in the sciences.
As a parent, you may choose not to have your child participate in the New York State 3-8 Assessments.
To refuse your child’s participation in the assessments, you may write a letter to your child’s building principal stating your child’s first and last name, homeroom teacher, and current grade level, as well as your desire to have your child opt out of testing for the 2023-2024 3-8 New York State Assessments. Please date and sign the letter and return it to your child’s homeroom teacher before Tuesday, April 2, 2024.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child and this year’s administration of the NYS Assessments, please contact their school building’s administrators by calling the main office.
