Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)

Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) is a framework for how school districts can build the necessary systems to ensure that each and every student receives a high quality educational experience. It is designed to support schools with proactively identifying and addressing the strengths and needs of all students. MTSS provides a continuum of supports, which are conceptualized across three levels of increasing intensity. The MTSS process begins with the proactive identification of students in need of additional support in a skill area (i.e. reading, math, behavior, social-emotional wellness). Identified students receive evidence-based interventions that are matched to their individual skill deficit and level of need. Student skill progress is monitored over time, to determine the student’s response to interventions. MTSS is intended to help ALL students achieve academic and behavioral success.
