English Language Arts

The goal of the Longwood Central School District’s English department is for students to become avid readers and writers who are creative, reflective critical thinkers. Our K-12 district curriculum aligns with the New York State Next Generation Standards. We strive for all students to learn and grow each day and to develop a literacy competence that can be used across all interdisciplinary areas.
Our Literacy Program aims to guide students toward proficient and lifelong reading/writing skills. In grades K-6, the Longwood School District follows a Balanced Literacy structure.

There are five different components of balanced literacy: read aloud, shared reading, guided reading, independent reading, and word study. The workshop model allows teachers to differentiate and meet the needs of all their students. In addition, our students in grades K-3 follow a phonics program to develop student’s foundational reading skills.

Ultimately, our goal is to guide students to become proficient writers and lifelong readers who are college-and career-ready.
