Superintendent's Welcome

Dear Longwood School Community,

Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year! I hope you all had a rejuvenating summer break with plenty of time to connect with family and friends. The start of school is quickly approaching, and we look forward to welcoming our students back into our classrooms on Wednesday, September 6, 2023.

As always, our students achieved so many outstanding accomplishments, both in and outside of the classroom, this past school year. We were proud to announce that two of Longwood's seniors were chosen out of only nine on Long Island as Newsday's Extraordinary Seniors for their kindness, perseverance, and passion. Through our college partnerships, one of our graduates made history by earning his college degree before graduating from high school. We also celebrated a New York State and Brookhaven Elementary School Science Fair first place winner, Section XI and Suffolk County Championship athletic teams, an outstanding Unified Sports program, a top honored Robotics team, record numbers of students earning the Seal of Biliteracy and Seal of Civics, and our student musicians performed at National festivals, earned All-County honors and Longwood was recognized as the top music program in all of New York State.

This summer, our schools were filled with expanded learning opportunities for our students, providing academic and social support, for our K-12 students, including the Summer Bridge Reading Program, Extended School Year, the ENL Summer Program, transition and recovery programs, and a new opportunity for our incoming kindergarten students, the Kickstart Program.

In the 2023-2024 school year, we will continue to partner with our community to encourage innovation and inclusivity while leveraging technology to enhance engagement and personalize instruction for all students. The foundation of our community remains strong, and we continue to celebrate the diversity and inclusivity that makes us Longwood each and every day with Pride, Spirit, and Heart.

As always, we encourage our families and community members to actively participate within the Longwood School community. We value the partnership between home and school and are committed to keeping the lines of communication open. Together, we will build a strong foundation for lifelong learning while empowering our students to become responsible-contributing citizens and the true leaders of tomorrow.

We wish everyone a happy, healthy school year and a great first day. Once again, thank you for your continued partnership and support as we continue to work together for Every One ... Every Day!

Sincerely,

Lance Lohman, Ed.D.
