Social Studies Department Chair Named Harry C. Charles Outstanding Social Studies Chairperson

Congratulations to High School Social Studies Department Chair Daniel Tapia, who was recently honored with the Harry C. Charles Outstanding Social Studies Chairperson Award by the Long Island Council for Social Studies (LICSS). This distinguished award recognizes exceptional leadership, innovation, and commitment to advancing social studies education across Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Mr. Tapia has led Longwood High School’s Social Studies Department for more than 18 years, fostering a culture of integrity, collaboration, and student-centered learning.

Since beginning his career in 1996, he has taught U.S. History, AP World History, and senior electives while mentoring a team of 25 educators. Under his leadership, the department launched a robust civics program aligned with New York State initiatives.

In addition to his work in the classroom and as a department leader, Mr. Tapia has played a vital role in the Late Afternoon Program for more than two decades, supporting student learning beyond the traditional school day.

A key highlight of Mr. Tapia’s leadership is the development of Longwood Travels, an international learning initiative that began in 2009. This immersive program has provided over 600 students with opportunities to experience the culture and history of countries such as Ireland, Scotland, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Germany, Poland, Italy, and Ecuador—broadening their worldviews through firsthand global experiences.

As a lifelong learner, he recently earned certifications in Bilingual Education and Work-Based Learning. He actively contributes to the Academies of Longwood, helping students explore career paths linked to local industries.

Mr. Tapia’s steady leadership, innovative vision, and deep dedication to educators and students make him deserving of this esteemed recognition.
