Ridge Elementary Student Takes First Place at BNL Science Fair

Ridge Elementary School third-grade student Juliana earned first place at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Elementary Science Fair for her experiment, Who is the Better Filter Feeders: Oysters or Clams?

Competing against schools throughout Suffolk County, Juliana's project determined which shellfish is a better filter feeder. At the experiment's conclusion, she discovered that after four trials, oysters are proven to be better and faster filter feeders.

"I learned that oysters and clams are the same because they're shellfish," said Juliana.  "But, they're also different because oysters use muscles and clams use siphons to pull in water."

As a first-place winner, Juliana received a banner that will be shared at Ridge Elementary School, and she will be honored at an upcoming Suffolk County Legislative meeting. Congratulations Juliana!
