The Longwood Central School District was honored to welcome nearly 400 public education leaders, representing three-quarters of Suffolk County’s school districts, to the 21st annual Longwood Legislative Breakfast. Co-sponsored by Eastern Suffolk BOCES and the Suffolk Region PTA, the event continues to serve as a vital platform for advocacy, addressing the most pressing challenges in public education and the impact on students, schools, and communities.
Held on Saturday, February 1, at Longwood Middle School, the program commenced with opening remarks from Dr. Lohman, Superintendent of Schools, who expressed gratitude for the unwavering dedication of all attendees.
“Today marks the 21st year that we have gathered in this room to advocate for public education with one unified voice,” stated Dr. Lohman. “This year, we are proud to welcome a record number of attendees—nearly 400 participants representing 43 school districts. Many of you have been with us since the beginning, and we thank you for your continued commitment to our students, educators, and communities across Long Island.”
The event began with an inspiring performance by eighth-grader Jillian Brown, who demonstrated her passion for music by playing the keyboard using innovative eye-tracking technology. The program continued with two distinguished keynote speakers: Brian Cechnicki, Executive Director of the Association of School Business Officials, and David Wicks, Chief Operating Officer of Eastern Suffolk BOCES.
During his presentation, Mr. Wicks was joined by Class of 2023 alumnus Bryan Diaz Ximello, who shared his remarkable journey of earning an associate degree from Suffolk County Community College before graduating from Longwood High School—a testament to his dedication and the wealth of opportunities and support available for Longwood students.
Following the keynote addresses, engaging discussions took place among district representatives, students, and members of the New York State Senate and Assembly, covering critical topics such as foundation aid, zero-emission school buses, and the state civil service system.
Congratulations to our Legislative Committee student leaders, sophomore Amanda Johnson, for addressing our elected officials about the importance of filling critical positions with qualified candidates, and senior Carlie Preudhomme for delivering the closing remarks.
We extend our sincere appreciation to all who attended, with special recognition to Senators Monica Martinez, Mario Mattera, Dean Murray, Anthony Palumbo, and Alexis Weik, as well as Assembly Members Joe DeStefano, Michael Durso, Michael J. Fitzpatrick, Rebecca Kassay, Jarrett Gandolfo, Jodi Giglio, Tommy John Schiavoni, and Doug Smith for their participation and continued advocacy on behalf of public education.
Together, we remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring a brighter future for all students.
