Longwood Strengthens Commitment to the MBK Challenge Through Community Collaboration

The Longwood Central School District recently hosted a Town Hall meeting at Longwood Library, formally reaffirming its commitment to the My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Community Challenge, an initiative launched by the New York State Education Department to address opportunity gaps and improve life outcomes for boys and young men of color.

This event served as a vital forum for community collaboration, engaging key stakeholders, organizations, and educational institutions. This collaboration strengthens outreach efforts and expands career and volunteer opportunities for our students, including job placements, internships, and community service initiatives— all of which are crucial in advancing the priorities and milestones of the MBK Challenge.

In addition to thoughtful presentations by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lohman, Assistant to the Superintendent for Administration Jennifer McCarthy, Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel and Community Services Dr. Vaughn Denton, and MBK Program Manager Elrich Bowlay-Williams, the event also featured contributions from numerous representatives of community organizations, colleges, and universities, further enriching the collaboration.

We take immense pride in the leadership and dedication demonstrated by our MBK student leaders Ricky Figueroa Rodriguez, Anthony Banfield, Junior Fernandez, Jeremyh Jean Baptiste, Demetrius Flores, and William Gonzalez, for their unwavering commitment to excellence and their efforts to inspire their peers and contribute meaningfully to their community.

The MBK initiative, launched nationally by President Obama in 2014, is dedicated to closing opportunity gaps by promoting strategies that support education, workforce readiness, mentorship, and civic engagement.

By embracing the MBK Community Challenge, the District reaffirms its commitment to developing and implementing a strategic, collaborative plan of action aimed at addressing key areas for improvement in alignment with the MBK Milestones.
