Jeanne Knudsen Named Outstanding High School Social Studies Teacher by LICSS

The Long Island Council for Social Studies (LICSS), the premier professional organization of Social Studies Teachers in Nassau and Suffolk, has selected Longwood High School teacher Jeanne Knudsen for the prestigious Outstanding High School Social Studies Teacher Award.

"Mrs. Knudsen’s passion for her students and for social studies education has had a profound impact on our school community,”  said Superintendent Dr. Lohman. "Her dedication to developing well-rounded, civically engaged students is truly commendable and deserving of this recognition.”

Mrs. Knudsen has taught Global Studies and Economics at Longwood High School since 2003. She serves as the High School Best Buddies Chapter facilitator and is a member of the Board of Education Legislative and Safety Committees.

She has been designated a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Scholar, a member of the Teacher Advisory Council for the National Constitution Center, a C-SPAN Fellow, and a White House History Teacher Institute alumni. Working with the National Council for Social Studies, Mrs. Knudsen helped redefine "Social Studies" for the 21st century.

Mrs. Knudsen worked collaboratively with a team of educators in the launch of the High School Seal of Civics program, where she currently serves as the advisor. The program provides students with numerous opportunities to become active participants in the school community. In addition, she plays an instrumental role in public education advocacy, working with students participating in our Legislative Breakfast and Lobby Day.

Mrs. Knudsen was chosen for the award based on her knowledge of social studies content and current social studies issues, as well as her compelling and inspiring teaching of social studies, including her ability to convey the importance and vitality of social studies to students.
