The Longwood Central School District was proud to welcome close to 400 public education leaders, representing three-quarters of the school districts from Suffolk County, to advocate for our students, schools, and communities at the Longwood Legislative Breakfast, co-sponsored by ESBOCES and Suffolk Region PTA. Now in its 21st year, the event continues to address the ongoing challenges facing public education and the potential impact on students.
Through the leadership of our Book Creator Ambassadors, our elementary schools have launched a Global Pen Pal Project that connects close to 400 of our students with peers from across the globe, including Canada, the United Kingdom, Poland, Croatia, Italy, Mexico, and, starting in March, South Korea.
In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the District’s Community Connections Committee proudly hosted the Annual Unity Walk on Saturday, January 18, 2025, bringing together hundreds of participants for a meaningful celebration of diversity, peace, and solidarity.
Close to 320 Longwood High School students recently participated in the Annual Hack-a-Thon, an innovative computer science programming event designed to spark students’ interest in coding and computer programming.

This holiday season, fifth-grade students from Mrs. Mackenzie’s, Mr. Burghardt’s, and Mrs. O’Connor’s classes are exemplifying the true spirit of giving by assembling 75 Christmas stockings for troops serving overseas as part of the Stockings for Soldiers program. In addition, they extended their kindness to local veterans, ensuring that their gratitude reached those who have served both near and far.

At the Thursday, October 10 meeting, the Longwood Board of Education recognized several outstanding individuals who make our school community so special.
As part of the Longwood High School Seal of Civic Readiness Program and College and Career Pathways, local representatives from all levels of government visited with students to share the importance of civic engagement and future career opportunities within our community.

School districts across Long Island have been made aware of a social media post that has been circulating across the entire nation over the past few days that references a school threat and the pulling of a fire alarm. Our local law enforcement agencies have been actively tracking this nationwide post, which continues to be re-shared on social media platforms, and have assured us that it is unrelated to our local area and has been found to be non-credible.
At the Thursday, September 12 Board of Education meeting, the district's O&M team was recognized for their outstanding work in the cleanup efforts following a flood at West Middle Island Elementary School.
“This situation truly demonstrates the dedication and heart of our team,” said Superintendent Dr. Lohman. “When the flood hit, every single crew member dropped everything to help restore West Middle Island, ensuring the building would be ready for our students."
The Longwood Central School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Jennifer Schuster as the new assistant principal at Longwood Junior High School.
Mrs. Schuster has been an integral part of the Longwood School community since 1997 when she was hired as a Spanish teacher for grades 7-12. In 2017, she was named the World Languages Department Chair at Longwood Junior High School, where she supervised the scheduling for French, Italian, and Spanish courses to optimize learning outcomes, led the development of common assessments, delivered professional development aligned with district goals, and represented our district on the national stage as part of the Junior High School Essential Elements to Watch Team. She also served as a facilitator for the Longwood High School Late Afternoon Program.
On Thursday, August 22, Longwood High School celebrated 21 students who completed the requirements to earn their high school diplomas, joining their classmates from the Class of 2024 as the newest Longwood alumni.

During a ceremony on Monday, June 3, 26 seniors were honored for earning the Seal of Civic Readiness from New York State. To achieve this prestigious honor, students engaged in various civic activities, such as organizing a voter registration drive for their peers, lobbying in Albany on educational issues, participating in the Ambassador Program at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, studying the Executive Office and presidential power at Long Island University’s Roosevelt House, and supporting local civic associations with community projects.
Longwood High School senior Ray McLean won the "Most Popular Presentation" award in the online International Polygence Rising Scholars Symposium for the topic, "What are the causes and physiological implications of childhood trauma, and how does it directly manifest symptoms of stress and psychiatric disorders?"
For over five months, Ray utilized numerous websites to read more than 90 research papers to synthesize a peer review on how childhood trauma affects different brain structures.
Longwood Middle School recently hosted an exciting Fire and Emergency Services Volunteerism Day featuring the Coram, Middle Island, Ridge, Yaphank, and Gordon Heights fire departments, along with the Suffolk County Police and Sheriff Departments.

Longwood School District’s Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel and Community Services, Dr. Vaughn Denton, was recently honored as a special guest of Legislator Caracappa at the April 9 General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature for being designated the Fourth Legislative District’s “Champion of Diversity” for his continuous work in recognizing and celebrating our school community’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural competence.

We are proud to announce that Longwood Central School District has been honored, for the 16th consecutive year, as one of the nation’s best communities for music education by The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation for our outstanding commitment to music education.
On the afternoon of April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will be visible throughout New York State. Although Nassau and Suffolk County are not in the path of totality, residents will be able to see just under 90% coverage between approximately 2:00 and 4:30 pm, with peak coverage occurring at approximately 3:26 pm.
In preparation for the Solar Eclipse, we have arranged to have eclipse-viewing glasses available for all of our students and staff so that they may witness this natural phenomenon safely.
As part of Longwood’s long-standing commitment to advocacy for public education, a team of 28 members from our Legislative Committee, including Board President Mrs. Victoria Molloy, Superintendent Dr. Lohman, administrators, students, and community members, traveled to the New York State Capitol to meet directly with representatives from the Senate and Assembly to advocate for critical issues impacting public education.

Longwood High School senior Gregory Cohen has been named a finalist in the prestigious 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program for his exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. He is among the top high school students nationwide to continue competing for scholarships offered in the spring.

Longwood High School junior Beberly Monzon Noj has been selected as a delegate representing Long Island at the statewide Angelo Del Toro Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute (PRHYLI) Assembly.
The Longwood Central School District, through participation in the New York State Universal Pre-Kindergarten Program Grant, is providing a ten-month, five days per week, 5.5 hours per day (full-day) pre-school in September 2023. The program will follow the Longwood Central School District calendar.

The International Day of Peace was recognized on September 23, with elementary students participating in community-building activities, decorating peace rocks and doves, forming peace signs, and sharing poems focused on kindness, compassion, and the meaning of peace.
