Longwood Welcomes Districts From Across Suffolk County to Unite for Public Education

The Longwood Central School District was proud to welcome close to 400 public education leaders, representing three-quarters of the school districts from Suffolk County, to advocate for our students, schools, and communities at the Longwood Legislative Breakfast, co-sponsored by ESBOCES and Suffolk Region PTA. Now in its 21st year, the event continues to address the ongoing challenges facing public education and the potential impact on students.

 Fifth Graders Exemplify the Spirit of Giving: Stockings for Soldiers and Veterans

This holiday season, fifth-grade students from Mrs. Mackenzie’s, Mr. Burghardt’s, and Mrs. O’Connor’s classes are exemplifying the true spirit of giving by assembling 75 Christmas stockings for troops serving overseas as part of the Stockings for Soldiers program. In addition, they extended their kindness to local veterans, ensuring that their gratitude reached those who have served both near and far.

Four Longwood High School Students Recognized as Commended Students in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program

The community is invited to our bi-annual School/Community Forum on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at 7:00 PM, at Longwood High School. Residents are invited to express their points of view to the Board of Education, or just listen
to the comments made by others. Organizations within the Longwood community are also invited to send a representative to comment on behalf of their organization.

Local Leaders Share the Importance of Civic Engagement with High School Students

As part of the Longwood High School Seal of Civic Readiness Program and College and Career Pathways, local representatives from all levels of government visited with students to share the importance of civic engagement and future career opportunities within our community. 

Coordinated by the Social Studies Department and the Board of Education Legislative Committee, students met with local leaders and representatives to hear personal stories, discuss various roles in government, and how they can become more active within their community and beyond.

Junior High School Student Shares Story of Resilience and Courage

Longwood Junior High School eighth grader Jillian Brown, affectionately known as "JJ," captivated her classmates and teachers recently with a deeply moving "All About Me" presentation.

With remarkable courage, JJ shared her journey of resilience following a life-altering accident, bravely detailing the hurdles and challenges she has overcome.

Circulating Social Media Post - An Important Message from Dr. Lohman

School districts across Long Island have been made aware of a social media post that has been circulating across the entire nation over the past few days that references a school threat and the pulling of a fire alarm. Our local law enforcement agencies have been actively tracking this nationwide post, which continues to be re-shared on social media platforms, and have assured us that it is unrelated to our local area and has been found to be non-credible.

Longwood Board Recognizes O&M Crew

At the Thursday, September 12 Board of Education meeting, the district's O&M team was recognized for their outstanding work in the cleanup efforts following a flood at West Middle Island Elementary School.

“This situation truly demonstrates the dedication and heart of our team,” said Superintendent Dr. Lohman. “When the flood hit, every single crew member dropped everything to help restore West Middle Island, ensuring the building would be ready for our students."

New Assistant Principal Appointed at Longwood Junior High School

The Longwood Central School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Jennifer Schuster as the new assistant principal at Longwood Junior High School.

Mrs. Schuster has been an integral part of the Longwood School community since 1997 when she was hired as a Spanish teacher for grades 7-12. In 2017, she was named the World Languages Department Chair at Longwood Junior High School, where she supervised the scheduling for French, Italian, and Spanish courses to optimize learning outcomes, led the development of common assessments, delivered professional development aligned with district goals, and represented our district on the national stage as part of the Junior High School Essential Elements to Watch Team. She also served as a facilitator for the Longwood High School Late Afternoon Program.

Junior High School Redesignated as a "School to Watch"

The Longwood Central School District is proud to announce that the Junior High School has once again earned redesignation as a New York State and National Essential Elements School to Watch, marking the fourth consecutive recognition since 2012. This recognition comes following a rigorous assessment process, including a detailed review process and on-site evaluations.

Longwood High  School Seniors Earn Seal of Civic Readiness

During a ceremony on Monday, June 3, 26 seniors were honored for earning the Seal of Civic Readiness from New York State. To achieve this prestigious honor, students engaged in various civic activities, such as organizing a voter registration drive for their peers, lobbying in Albany on educational issues, participating in the Ambassador Program at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, studying the Executive Office and presidential power at Long Island University’s Roosevelt House, and supporting local civic associations with community projects.

Tenth Grade Student Earns Top Honors in Symposium of Rising Scholars

Longwood High School senior Ray McLean won the "Most Popular Presentation" award in the online International Polygence Rising Scholars Symposium for the topic, "What are the causes and physiological implications of childhood trauma, and how does it directly manifest symptoms of stress and psychiatric disorders?" 

For over five months, Ray utilized numerous websites to read more than 90 research papers to synthesize a peer review on how childhood trauma affects different brain structures.

2024-2025 Budget/Bond Vote and Board Election

On Tuesday, May 21, our school community will be asked to vote on our annual school budget that will ensure that our students continue to receive a well-rounded education and an engaging learning environment, the election of three board members, and a bond proposal designed to maintain and upgrade our school district’s facilities, while we continue to expand upon opportunities and experiences for every student to reach their true potential.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Vaughn Denton Selected as a Champion of Diversity

Longwood School District’s Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel and Community Services, Dr. Vaughn Denton, was recently honored as a special guest of Legislator Caracappa at the April 9 General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature for being designated the Fourth Legislative District’s “Champion of Diversity” for his continuous work in recognizing and celebrating our school community’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural competence.

District Hosts Another Successful Annual Technology Showcase!

On Tuesday, March 26, close to 500 community members attended an exciting and interactive Districtwide Technology Showcase.

Our K-12 students and teachers demonstrated more than 100 applications of interactive instructional technologies, including BeeBots coding, i-Ready, FIRST LEGO initiatives, Esports, Book Creator, college and career-based technology pathways in networking, automotive mechanics, drones, competition-level high school robotics, and more!

Solar Eclipse - Monday, April 8, 2024


On the afternoon of April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will be visible throughout New York State. Although Nassau and Suffolk County are not in the path of totality, residents will be able to see just under 90% coverage between approximately 2:00 and 4:30 pm, with peak coverage occurring at approximately 3:26 pm. 

In preparation for the Solar Eclipse, we have arranged to have eclipse-viewing glasses available for all of our students and staff so that they may witness this natural phenomenon safely.

Legislative Committee Meets with Senate and Assembly Officials

As part of Longwood’s long-standing commitment to advocacy for public education, a team of 28 members from our Legislative Committee, including Board President Mrs. Victoria Molloy, Superintendent Dr. Lohman, administrators, students, and community members, traveled to the New York State Capitol to meet directly with representatives from the Senate and Assembly to advocate for critical issues impacting public education.

Three Longwood Shining Stars Honored by SCOPE Education Services

Three members of our Longwood School community were selected as "Shining Stars" at the 23rd Annual SCOPE Education Services School District Awards dinner held on March 18, which honors distinguished individuals for their exemplary service to public education.

  • Support Staff Award - Tom Murphy, School Lunch Manager

Student-Musicians Selected for All-County Festival

Congratulations to our student musicians from Longwood High School, Junior High School, and Middle School who have been selected to perform in the Suffolk County Music Educators Association (SCMEA) All-County Festival held on March 9 and 10 at Southampton High School! These talented musicians, in grades five through 10, have demonstrated excellence with both their voices and instruments!

Little Lion Week Scores Big with Varsity Football Team and Ridge Elementary Students

Ridge Elementary students recently partnered with our varsity football team for Little Lion Week, where students enjoyed question-and-answer sessions with our high school athletes through Google Meet. As a culminating activity, the players visited the students in class, where they read books and enjoyed time together.

Longwood High School Senior Chosen for Prestigious Huntsman Program

Longwood High School senior Eva Zheberlyaeva has been accepted into the prestigious University of Pennsylvania's Huntsman Program.

Among thousands of applicants, Eva is among only 50 students accepted nationwide each year into the highly competitive International Business & Studies program based on her academic commitment, care for others, and dedication to the community.

Longwood Schools Honored for Excellence in School Safety and Student Support

At the December 8 meeting, Suffolk County Deputy Police Commissioner Risco Mention-Lewis presented the Longwood Central School District Board of Education with a proclamation for excellence in school safety and student support initiatives, including extending resources for our community and serving as a role model for schools across the county, state, and nation.

Ridge Hosts Differently-Abled Day

Third and fourth-grade students at Ridge Elementary School participated in a special event to increase their knowledge about disabilities and foster positive attitudes about people who are different. As part of Differently-Abled Assembly Day, students learned about visual, physical, and hearing impairments, learning disabilities, autism, and ADHD.

Ridge Third Grader Recognized for Winning New York State Science Fair

At today's Suffolk County Legislative meeting, Ridge Elementary School fourth-grader Juliana Gianmugnai was recognized for being named the June 2023 first-place winner not only at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Elementary Science Fair but also at the New York State Science Fair for her experiment, Which One is the Best Filter Feeder: Oysters or Clams?
