T.R.U.T.H 2008-2009

Character Education is an important component of our curriculum.  It is our belief that the T.R.U.T.H. principles will help students become kind, respectful and courteous citizens.  Here at West Middle Island we are committed to these principles:

T olerance
R espect
U nderstanding
T eamwork
H armony

During the months of September and October, the students will revisit the principle of Teamwork while reading the book One Green Apple by Eve Bunting.  This story depicts a girl, Farah, who is seemingly different from her classmates, but with kindness and understanding she contributes to the making of apple cider.  Farah not only helps make apple cider, but also begins to develop friendships among her classmates.

Throughout the months of January and February, our students will be learning about Respect.  Part of being respectful is accepting others talents and ideas and realizing that we all have gifts to share.  The students will read together the classic story of Frederick by Leo Lionni and learn how one little mouse was considered different, but had a unique gift to share with his mouse family.  This is a wonderful time to discuss with your child the importance of recognizing the gifts of others.

Understanding is the focus for the months of November and December.  The students will read together Barbara Cole’s book Anna & Natalie.  It is not until the end of the story that the true meaning of understanding is unveiled.  This is a poignant story of how Anna deals with her disability and touches the hearts of her classmates. Be sure to ask your child to explain to you why Anna was so special.

Tolerance is the character education focus for the months of March and April at West Middle Island.  The teachers will be sharing with the students various tales from the book, Rhinos and Raspberries.  This book is a compilation of 12 different tales which address the concept of tolerance.  Be sure to ask your child about the story that was discussed in his or her classroom.
