First Grade Goals

First Grade Reading and Writing (ELA)

Through balanced literacy, students in first grade become actively involved in the reading process. They learn to read by reading authentic literature, phonics readers, poetry and songs, and charts and graphs. Through leveled resources, individual student needs are met. In writing, students learn that writing is a process that includes brainstorming, conferencing, and publishing.

Students in first grade are encouraged to become active listeners. It is expected that students listen attentively for periods of time. They should listen respectfully, without interrupting, when others speak. Additionally, students should speak clearly and audibly. They are expected to use age appropriate vocabulary when speaking and use complete sentences.



 
First Grade Math Goals


* Students will demonstrate number sense in operations and number theories.

* Students will demonstrate an understanding of algebra using variables and expressions, patterns, relationships and functions.

* Students will demonstrate knowledge of geometric shapes and relationships.

* Students will use varied units of measurement.

* Students will demonstrate knowledge of statistics and probability by collecting, organizing, displaying, analyzing and making predictions about data.


 



 
First Grade Science Goals


The first grade curriculum introduces and practices topics that include Analysis, Inquiry and Design, Information Systems, The Physical Setting and Living Environment, Common Themes and Problem Solving. In addition, students will be introduced to Properties of Objects, and Seeds to Plants.


 



First Grade Social Studies Goals


The content area of first grade Social Studies is divided into five main areas:

1) Community
2) History
3) Geography
4) Economics
5) Politics/Government

These areas are studied through a focus on holidays, communities, current events, families and careers.
