First Grade
Reading and Writing (ELA)
Through balanced
literacy, students in first grade become actively
involved in the reading process. They learn to read
by reading authentic literature, phonics readers,
poetry and songs, and charts and graphs. Through
leveled resources, individual student needs are met.
In writing, students learn that writing is a process
that includes brainstorming, conferencing, and
publishing.
Students in first
grade are encouraged to become active listeners. It
