The Health Education program is
designed to improve the quality of students' lives and provide them with
the framework for making healthy choices for life. Longwood Middle
School utilizes the HealthSmart curriculum to accomplish this goal.
HealthSmart is a comprehensive K-12 health curriculum which is
interactive between school and home. The learning activities are
designed to help students develop health-related skills, make and
celebrate healthy choices, and advocate for the healthy choices of their
peers. The program fosters a positive self-image that students are encouraged
to build upon. The students are taught how to deal with a variety of
health issues and learn strategies to help them make the right
decisions. Students will use these strategies for a life.
Each grade level of HealthSmart is divided into four units. Lessons and
activities build sequentially in grade K-12 to provide reinforcement and
continuity that will support children’s efforts to make healthy choices.
The units in grades 5-6 are: Personal and Family Health, Safety and
Injury Prevention, Nutrition and Physical Activity, and Tobacco and
Alcohol Prevention. Our monthly parent letter contains health themes to
help enhance the curriculum.
Our goal at the Longwood Middle School is to raise health conscious,
responsible children who can distinguish between smart, healthy choices
and choices that will jeopardize their health and/or well-being.
