Introduction
EXCEL is the primary segment of the Longwood Middle School Acceleration Program. It is made up of students who have been recommended by their teachers as the most academically high-performing students in the class. They are extremely self-motivated and extremely bright. They have demonstrated that they have the ability to go far beyond the basic, required grade appropriate curriculum content. EXCEL offers them an opportunity to work on group and individual projects which challenge their intellectual and creative abilities.
The group project for EXCEL this year is entitled “Middle School Multicultural Mosaic.” It is will be submitted as a project of the International Schools CyberFair 2004, sponsored by the Global Schoolhouse. "CyberFair encourages youth to connect the knowledge they learn in school to real world applications. Youth are inspired to 'take action' in order to improve their lives and unite their communities." We surveyed our student body for information about ethnic diversity. The purpose of this project is to highlight the variety of nationalities represented by the Middle School student body. Our "community" includes our school district and surrounding neighborhoods. Our goals include showing how the demographics in the district have evolved, and how ethnic tolerance may or may not have changed. In addition, we hope to share some resources which will be helpful to many people in our community.
We each love the contributions that our families make to the color of community unity in our district. We cherish the richness that each ethnic group adds to the student body as a whole. We value the overall benefits of students attending a school with peers from such a variety of ethnic groups.

Assistant Principals of Longwood Middle School
Longwood Middle School is a multicultural setting that provides unique educational and social interactions between students, staff, and community members. Longwood Middle School is an open building, meaning there are no walls between class settings. We believe this representative of the students as well. The building supports the belief that openness is the best method of interaction and learning for the diverse population of the school. At last glance, the student population had representation from over twenty-nine countries, uncountable religions, and all racial groups. Non-Caucasian students comprise over thirty-seven percent of our student population. Diversity is welcomed and explored and is truly an asset to the Longwood community.
Here at the Middle School, students interact with one another throughout the day and have the opportunity to learn from the wealth of knowledge that the diversity brings to the table. Our staff works hard at educating our students to enable then to be sensitive to and aware of various cultures and practices.
As administrators in Longwood Middle School, it is a rewarding experience to witness the successful interaction and growth of our students as a result of the diversity within our building and community.
