Anatomy and Physiology

High school students have a natural curiosity about the structure and function of the human body. Many of our students will pursue careers in the health field. This course will prepare them for college and future health related careers.

A subject such as Anatomy and Physiology offers students the chance to fulfill their curiosity while, at the same time, they learn a great deal of science. Anatomy and Physiology are some of the few areas that successfully integrate aspects of biology, chemistry, and physics. While examining human structure and function, students use elements of all the sciences in putting together pieces of a puzzle.

Biology Applications

There are numerous laboratory experiences in Anatomy and Physiology that allow students to explore higher-level biological concepts. Anatomy & Physiology introduces students to the intricacies of the human body in health and disease. This course would serve as a forum for the application of basic science concepts to the study of the human body and facilitate the development and enhancement of problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. The course will provide a hands-on, laboratory-based class allowing the students to make an in-depth analysis of human anatomy and physiology. Students will study major systems of the body, health and nutrition, disease processes and explore career opportunities in health care. This course will be especially beneficial for students who wish to pursue careers in medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, nursing and other related health sciences.

Chemistry Applications

Laboratory experiences in basic chemistry involving acids, bases, and salts are valuable ways to introduce students to the power of chemistry in living organisms. Even students who have taken chemistry courses may not have learned their importance in living systems. Additional experiences involving organic chemistry will give students insight into the inner workings of living cells. Most students appreciate being able to use their own skills at chemical analysis to solve a puzzle, rather than to listen to theorizing by a lecturer. Anatomy and Physiology lab experiences are ideal for this purpose.


Physics Applications

Laboratory experiences in physics include analyzing of the angles and length of bones being used as levers. Physics can be used in practical applications, and students learn the value of proper bone structure in function of limbs. The use of prosthetic devices and their design can be better understood when applying the basic principles of physics.


Anatomy and Physiology Successfully Addresses the New York State Mathematics, Science, and Technology Learning Standards

Standard 1. Students will use mathematical analysis, scientific inquiry, and engineering design, as appropriate, to pose questions, seek answers, and develop solutions.

Anatomy and Physiology is particularly well suited to addressing this learning standard, as we will be analyzing bone structure and design.

Standard 2. Students will access, generate, process, and transfer information using appropriate technologies.

Aspects of biology, chemistry, physics, and computer technology are involved in studying anatomy and physiology. Information transfer via the Internet is increasingly being used by those in the medical field to collaborate and solve problems involving human anatomy and physiology.

Standard 4. Students will understand and apply scientific concepts, principles, and theories pertaining to the physical setting and living environment, and recognize the historical development of ideas in science.

Many concepts in Anatomy and Physiology involve "common sense" science. Basically, the application of scientific concepts to Anatomy and Physiology problems is a natural step for students, especially after they learn examples of how these concepts are involved in the design of living systems.

Standard 5. Students will apply technological knowledge and skills to design, construct, use, and evaluate products and systems to satisfy human and environmental needs.

Several laboratory experiences and projects will require students to come up with their own techniques and/or equipment to demonstrate the design and function of various body parts. Their challenge in finding a way to illustrate a design will lead them to be innovative with materials and knowledge.

Standard 6. Students will understand the relationships and common themes that connect mathematics, science, and technology, and apply the themes to these and other areas of learning.

Anatomy and physiology is one of the few subjects that successfully integrates these themes, in both classroom discussion and laboratory experiences.

Standard 7. Students will apply the knowledge and thinking skills of mathematics, science, and technology to address real-life problems and make informed decisions.

Real-life problems are the regular subject matter of Anatomy and Physiology. We will regularly apply math, science, and technology to investigate design and function. Every high school needs a course that encourages students to bring all their knowledge and skills to bear on socially relevant problems.
