LONGWOOD SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

HONORS/ADVANCED PLACEMENT SUMMER ASSIGNMENT

Dear Prospective Honors/AP Student:

The English Department embraces the philosophy that the honors/AP program is one that is linked firmly together from 9th through 12th grades. To ensure that the program is one of breadth, progression, and complexity, you will be required to compile and maintain a notebook that will be carried forth and used in each grade level. This notebook is a mandatory tool of the honors/AP program. The initial required part of this notebook will begin with this summer assignment. Please be aware of the guidelines for this assignment and the importance of following them.

Enclosed you will find a list of terms that are requisite for the grade

and level you will be entering in September 2011. You will:

·          purchase a three-ring binder and filler paper

·         define the terms

·         neatly handwrite the terms and definitions into the notebook (typewritten work will NOT be accepted)

·         prepare to be tested on the use of these terms the second day of class in September

Please note: your grade for this assignment will be contingent upon the amount and quality of work you complete.

If you are entering 9th or 10th grade honors, this assignment will be due on the first day of class in September. If you are entering 11th or 12th grade AP, this assignment will be due on Thursday, August 18, 2011.   Submit your WORK ONLY  (not the entire notebook)  to the Main Office on or before this date.

NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Before class begins, all honors/AP students should also reacquaint themselves with grammatical principles governing common errors in writing such as fragments, run-ons, and pronoun/antecedent agreement as well as with the rules of governing the writing of expository essays (thesis statement, topic sentences).

Honors/AP essays are expected to be exemplars of both Standard English and literary merit. If you do not complete the summer assignment, or if the assignment does not reflect honors/AP standard of quality, you will not be permitted to take the class. If for any reason an unexpected emergency arises that prevents you from turning in the assignment on time, you must contact the Main Office so that you are not penalized as stated above.

Enjoy the summer!

Sincerely,

Honors & AP Teachers
