Berlin and Girls

In 1918, Berlin wrote the show while stationed at Camp Upton, now the Brookhaven National (research) Laboratory. Our students are celebrating the show's centennial that features the songs God Bless America and Oh How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning.

This is a cross-curricular project that is being presented through the arts education our students receive. Several academic areas are covering this event including Home Economics/Family & Consumer Sciences, Art, Social Studies, and Music.

More, students in grades K-12 are learning about what went on in the area that is now their school district a century ago.

We do not sell tickets to our shows, nor do we reserve seats, but we are asking those who may be interested to contact 631-345-2960 to have a record of attendees.

We have received confirmation that our local legislators will be in attendance, as will officials from the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization which owns the Irving Berlin collection.

Fine Arts Department Program Overview

The goal of the Longwood Central School District’s Fine Arts Department is to create well-rounded students by offering students opportunities in several curricular content areas: Visual and Media Art, General and Performing Music, Food & Nutrition and Child Care. We also offer extra-curricular Theatre content in grades four through twelve.

We provide our students with the knowledge and skills necessary to be productive citizens of the 21st century. Students develop self-esteem, self-discipline and cognitive, creative, emotional and social skills by actively participating in the arts.

Longwood’s Music program is one of the best, having been designated a “Best Community for Music Education” by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation, each year since 2008.

Due to our sequential and comprehensive music program, students in our bands, orchestras and choruses – and the ensembles themselves - have been recognized by the New York State School Music Association, the New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education and the Suffolk County Music Educators Association.

Students are afforded a sequential study of music beginning in kindergarten. They learn Recorder in the third grade and begin formal instrumental and choral training in the fourth grade.

On the secondary level, our ensembles encompass several genres including concert, marching and jazz bands; mixed and select choruses; full, string and chamber orchestras; and drama and musical productions. Students in our music theory program learn in a state-of-the art composition lab.

Longwood’s twenty-five (25) music educators and fifteen (15) art educators are certified by New York State and serve students in four elementary campuses, one middle school, one junior high school and one senior high school.

They specialize in either general/classroom music, instrumental or vocal music, photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, pottery, cartooning and advertising art.

Our secondary-level Family & Consumer Science courses offer students the opportunity to bake, cook, sew, and take part in an early childhood program working with pre-school-aged children.

Our eight (8) teachers of Family & Consumer Science instruct students in grades seven through twelve in Character Education, Time and Recourse Management, Decision-making, Communication, Nutrition and Child Care.

Our curriculum is centered around and adheres to the New York State Standards. Most members of our expert staff hold Master’s Degrees, while two hold the doctoral degree.
